UNICEF Jobs: International Consultant Needed for Children’s Climate Risk Index in Zimbabwe.

Are you a climate risk specialist with a heart for children’s rights and strong quantitative & mapping skills? UNICEF Zimbabwe is looking for an International Consultant (non-Zimbabwean national) to lead a 40-day assignment in Harare to support the development of a Sub-National Children Climate Risk Index (CCRI).
What is this about?
- UNICEF is developing a CCRI for Zimbabwe, to identify which sub-national regions (provinces, districts) are most exposed and most vulnerable to climate and environmental hazards for children.
- The objective is to map hazards, exposure, vulnerabilities, and capacities related to sectors that affect children — such as health, education, WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene), nutrition, protection, and social protection.
- The consultant will collaborate with a national consultant and other stakeholders to ensure local relevance and accuracy.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Develop and define the theoretical framework for the CCRI model (what indicators to include, how to measure vulnerability, exposure, capacity).
- Collect and process quantitative and qualitative data for the sub-national level across relevant sectors.
- Create an interactive digital mapping tool that overlays hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and capacity — i.e. a visual & analytic model to show where children are most at risk.
- Validate findings through stakeholder consultations and workshops, including government, local communities, possibly youth or child-led groups.
- Provide recommendations for programming and interventions, based on results of the CCRI.

Why This Matters
- Many children in Zimbabwe are exposed to climate hazards — droughts, floods, changing rainfall patterns, heat extremes — but exposure alone doesn’t tell the full story. Vulnerability (health, poverty, access to services) and capacity (both community and governmental) also matter. A CCRI helps highlight where interventions are most needed.
- For donors, NGOs, and government: informed targeting means more efficient use of resources, better policy & planning.
- For children and communities: stronger resilience, better protection, and improved capacity to cope with climate change impacts.
How to Apply
- Applicants must submit a proposal that includes both technical and financial parts. The technical proposal should show your understanding of the scope, methodology, timeline, and deliverables. The financial should show your daily rate and any travel or other costs.
- Applications are submitted online through UNICEF’s official job portal.
