Position Overview: Protection Associate
As a Protection Associate, you’ll work closely with the Protection Officer or Senior Protection Officer to coordinate and implement protection responses in line with international standards. Your work will involve both strategic planning and operational engagement with communities, local authorities, and partners.
Key Operational Notes:
- Report to the office at 5:00 am for crowd control and management duties.
- Apply community-based protection strategies in diverse settings.
- Provide leadership in reception coordination and supervisory roles.
Key Responsibilities
Your core duties will include:
1. Protection Monitoring & Analysis
- Stay informed of political, social, and cultural developments affecting the protection environment.
- Apply international and national legal frameworks consistently.
- Comment on draft legislation and assist in eligibility and status determination.
2. Case Management & Solutions
- Advise persons of concern (PoC) and liaise with authorities for documentation issuance.
- Manage individual protection cases, including GBV and child protection issues.
- Identify durable solutions such as voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement and many more.
3. Community Engagement
- Ensure PoC are actively involved in decision-making processes.
- Contribute to child protection and education strategies at the country level.
- Promote community-based protection practices to strengthen response mechanisms.
4. Operational & Risk Management
- Enforce compliance with protection SOPs and UNHCR’s integrity standards.
- Identify and manage operational risks, escalating where necessary.
- Facilitate effective information management through disaggregated data and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma + 3 years relevant experience, OR
- Bachelor’s Degree + 2 years relevant experience.
- Fields of study: International Law, Political Science, or related.
Core Skills
- Strong computer literacy.
- In-depth knowledge of refugee protection principles and frameworks.
- Familiarity with protection-related guidelines, standards, and indicators.
Languages
- Proficiency in English is required.
- Knowledge of Arabic or another UN language is an asset.
Desirable Attributes
- Completion of the Protection Learning Programme.
- Experience in crowd management and community-based protection.
- Background in reception coordination or supervisory functions.
- Ability to work in dynamic settings and early reporting environments.
